First Encounter — Mistwood Ruins
Blaidd's first appearance is at the Mistwood Ruins in eastern Limgrave. When you approach the ruins, you will hear a distinctive howl. Return to Merchant Kale at the Church of Elleh and ask about the howling to receive the Snap emote. Use the Snap emote in the center of Mistwood Ruins, and Blaidd will leap down from the ruins above. He introduces himself as a "shadowbound beast" serving Lady Ranni and asks you to deliver news of her safety to him after you visit Caria Manor. Fextralife's Blaidd page has detailed encounter locations and dialogue options.
Role in Ranni's Questline
Blaidd is one of Ranni's key servants alongside Iji and Seluvis. His primary role in the quest involves investigating the fate of the Eternal Cities. After you join Ranni's service at Ranni's Rise, Blaidd is found in the underground area below Siofra River. He tells you he's searching for a way to open Nokron. Later, Blaidd appears as a summonable ally during the Radahn Festival, providing significant damage and aggro management. After Radahn's defeat and the starfall opens Nokron, Blaidd's role evolves as Ranni's quest advances toward the Age of Stars ending. Wikipedia's Elden Ring lore explores Blaidd's nature as a shadowbound beast created by the Two Fingers.
Summoning for Boss Fights
Blaidd's summon sign appears in exactly one boss fight: Starscourge Radahn at Redmane Castle. His sign is located on the northeastern edge of the battlefield, near the cliff. Blaidd is one of the tankiest summons available for this fight and can survive multiple of Radahn's attacks. His Royal Greatsword deals significant poise damage. Always summon him during the Radahn fight — not only does he help with damage, but speaking to him afterward advances both his personal story and Ranni's questline. Missing his summon sign means you may have missed freeing Alexander at Gael Tunnel first.
Blaidd's Equipment and Lore
Blaidd wields the Royal Greatsword, a colossal sword with a unique frost-based weapon art. This weapon can be obtained by defeating Blaidd at the end of his questline. His armor set — the Blaidd Set — includes the wolf-head helm, fur armor, and greaves. The set offers excellent poise for its weight and is popular among strength builds for its aesthetic. Lore-wise, Blaidd was created by the Two Fingers as a "shadow" to watch over Ranni, an empyrean candidate. Unlike most shadows, Blaidd genuinely loved and protected Ranni rather than serving as her jailer. His eventual madness when he tries to rebel against his nature is one of the game's most tragic moments.
The Tragic Ending at Ranni's Rise
After you deliver the Fingerslayer Blade to Ranni, Blaidd becomes hostile and is found trapped in the Forlorn Evergaol in Liurnia. Free him, and he thanks you before returning to Ranni's Rise. In the final stage of the quest, after Ranni departs for the Age of Stars, you will find Blaidd hostile outside Ranni's Rise, surrounded by the bodies of Black Knife assassins. He has gone mad, fighting against his shadowbound nature. Defeating him drops the Royal Greatsword and Blaidd's armor set — some of the best equipment in the game. This end is widely considered one of the most emotionally impactful moments in Elden Ring.
Rewards and Items
Blaidd's questline rewards include: the Royal Greatsword (colossal sword with frost weapon art, dropped at Ranni's Rise), the Blaidd Set (armor set including wolf head helm, sold by Iji after Blaidd's quest concludes), and the Blaidd's Summon not available as a spirit ash — he is only available as a summon for the Radahn fight. Blaidd's quest intertwines deeply with Ranni's, so completing his personal story requires seeing Ranni's Age of Stars ending through to completion. The full Blaidd experience spans from Limgrave through Caelid, Liurnia, Nokron, and back to Liurnia — covering nearly every major region in the game.
Completing Blaidd's Full Quest Chain
Blaidd's quest is interwoven with Ranni's, but requires specific additional steps to see his full story. After meeting him at Mistwood Ruins and delivering news of Ranni's safety, the next encounter is at Siofra River Well depths. Descend the elevator from Limgrave into the underground region and find Blaidd near the Worshippers' Woods site of grace. He tells you about the Eternal Cities and asks you to inform Iji of his progress. This conversation unlocks additional dialogue options with Iji at the Road to the Manor grace. If you miss this step, Blaidd will still appear at Radahn's Festival, but you lose the context about his investigations into Nokron. Successfully completing the Siofra River conversation also rewards the Finger Snap gesture if missed earlier, and Blaidd provides cryptic hints about the Nameless Eternal City hidden beneath the surface.
The Radahn Festival marks the midpoint of Blaidd's quest. His summon sign is located on the northeastern cliffs of the battlefield. Summoning him for the fight is not required to progress Ranni's quest, but skipping it means missing crucial dialogue where Blaidd acknowledges your strength and hints at his growing doubts about his shadowbound nature. After Radahn's defeat, speak to Blaidd at the battlefield's grace site. He will express excitement about the falling star opening Nokron. Later, when you reach the Forlorn Evergaol in Liurnia (accessible via a stone key), you will find Blaidd trapped inside — he claims Iji imprisoned him to "keep him safe." Freeing Blaidd from the evergaol requires using a Stonesword Key on the imp statue seal. After release, Blaidd returns to Ranni's Rise where he guards the entrance until the final confrontation. This entire chain spans from early game through late-game content, making it one of the longest individual NPC narratives in Elden Ring outside the main questlines.
Blaidd's Equipment — Complete Build Guide
The Royal Greatsword, obtained by defeating Blaidd at Ranni's Rise, is a colossal sword requiring 40 Strength, 18 Intelligence, and 25 Dexterity. Its unique weapon art, "Wolf's Assault," launches you forward with a spinning slash that releases a frost wave, dealing significant poise damage and applying frostbite buildup. The weapon scales primarily with Strength (B scaling at +10) and secondarily with Dexterity and Intelligence. Equipping the Royal Greatsword with the Royal Knight's Resolve ash of war on an off-hand weapon boosts its damage further. The weapon art's frost effect synergizes with the Frozen Armament spell for double frostbite application. For optimal damage, invest in 54 Strength (the two-handing soft cap) and 20 Intelligence to meet the minimum requirements while leaving room for Vigor and Endurance.
Blaidd's armor set is sold by Iji after Blaidd's quest concludes. The set includes the Wolf Helm (7.4 weight, 22 poise), the Fur Raiment (5.6 weight, 15 poise), and the Fur Leggings (4.0 weight, 10 poise). The complete set provides 47 total poise — enough to tank through light attacks without stagger. The Wolf Helm's design features a detailed wolf head reminiscent of Baleful Shadows, symbolizing Blaidd's role as a shadowbound beast. The set can be combined with the Bull-Goat Gauntlets to reach 51 poise with minimal weight increase. For fashion-conscious players, the Blaidd Set pairs well with any medium-weight gauntlets for a balanced look. The set's popularity among strength build enthusiasts stems from both its practical poise-to-weight ratio and its iconic visual design that references Radahn's festival aesthetic.
Shadowbound Beasts — Lore Explanation
Shadowbound beasts, or "shadows," are created by the Two Fingers to serve as guardians for empyreans — individuals capable of becoming a god and replacing Marika. Ranni, Malenia, and Miquella are all empyreans, meaning Blaidd could have been assigned to either of the twins under different circumstances. Shadows are described as "malformed" beings created specifically for this purpose, suggesting they are not natural creatures but manufactured by the Greater Will. Unlike ordinary servants, shadows have a built-in failsafe: if the empyrean they guard attempts to rebel against the Two Fingers, the shadow will go mad and turn hostile. This is exactly what happens to Blaidd — when Ranni rebels and plots to remove the Greater Will's influence, Blaidd's shadow programming activates, forcing him to attack despite his genuine loyalty and affection for Ranni.
Maliketh, Queen Marika's shadowbound beast, is the most powerful known shadow and the only one who fully succeeded in his duty. Unlike Blaidd, Maliketh was entrusted with the Rune of Death itself, making him arguably the most powerful being in the Lands Beyond the Erdtree. The comparison between Maliketh and Blaidd highlights the tragedy of Blaidd's story: where Maliketh embraced his shadow nature and became a feared executioner, Blaidd developed genuine emotions and free will, making his inevitable madness a betrayal of his very humanity. Iji's decision to imprison Blaidd in the Forlorn Evergaol was a desperate attempt to prevent the shadow's madness, but it merely delayed the inevitable. The corpses of Black Knife assassins found outside Ranni's Rise suggest that Blaidd fought against his programming until the end, killing his would-be executors before finally succumbing to madness — a final act of defiance even as his nature betrayed him.
